American Indian Color Lithographs by Arthur Schott from the 1857 "Report on the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey"

Following the annexation of Texas in 1846 and the War with Mexico in 1847, the United States acquired vast new territories in the west. The United States and Mexican Boundary Survey was established to fix the southern boundary of the United States from the mouth of the Rio Grande to the coast of California and to explore the territory it enclosed. One of the most important results were these first-hand images of the Indian tribes, including Seminole, Lipan Apache, Yumas, and Kiowa .The beautiful color lithographs by Arthur Schott of American Indians was part of the effort to report on the human resources in the new territories.
