Sir Francis Henry Jeune
"Matrimonial Causes"
This original 1891 Vanity Fair lithograph is of Judge Francis
Jeune who is shown on the bench in his wig with monocle and entitled "Matrimonial
Causes." The biography of Judge Jeune by Jehu Junior that comes with the print
explains the title:
"He became known in Parliamentary Committee
Rooms, and when Mr. Charles, Q. C., his only rival, was raised to the Bench, he
took silk, and practised with still more gain until the late President of the
Probate, Divorce, and Admiralty Division was promoted. Then, have long before
appeared in one very celebrated divorce suit, the Lord Chancellor converted him
into the junior Judicial Separatist - which was a very proper thing to do with
one who knew both the Church and the World so well.."
